When inhaled, asbestos fibers cause serious diseases of the respiratory tract and lungs. The health problems only appear after years (decades) and are hardly treatable. The asbestos-containing building materials, which have been banned since 1990, endanger the health of construction workers and residents - protective measures are still required during demolition.
